1.   Citation

    These Regulations may be cited as the Botswana Defence Force (Honours) Regulations.

2.   Award of honours

   The honours described in the Schedule shall be the honours which may be awarded to members of the Botswana Defence Force under the conditions specified therein.

1.   Founder Officer Medal

   (1) The Founder Officer Medal (F.O.M.) shall be awarded to all commissioned officers holding commissions at the formation of the Botswana Defence Force.

   (2) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of 40 mm, the obverse consisting of a red enamelled circular border with the legend "FOUNDER OFFICER MEDAL F.O.M." in gold letters, and an inner circle consisting, in relief, of a gold scroll bearing the title "BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE" surmounted by two circles, the outer circle enamelled in bottle green bearing the legend "THEBE YA SECHABA" in gold letters, and the small inner circle enamelled in red with the letters "B.D.F." in gold, the two circles being connected by crossed swords and surmounted by the Coat of Arms of Botswana, in gold relief, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

   (3) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 2.6 mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths-

         Green      7 mm

         Silver      3 mm

         Red      6 mm

         Silver      3 mm

         Green      7 mm.

2.   Long Service Order

   (1) The Long Service Order (L.S.O.) may be awarded to any member of the other ranks of the Botswana Defence Force who has had service in the Botswana Defence Force, with good conduct, for a period of not less than 15 years.

   (2) In the calculation of time, in making the award, any previous service in the Botswana Police Force of such member shall be taken into consideration.

   (3) The order shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold and shall be in the shape of a square diamond with a length and width of 54 mm, the obverse consisting of a light blue enamelled border cutting all four corners with the legend "LONG SERVICE ORDER L.S.O." in gold letters, on vertical and horizontal planes, and surrounding the centre motif consisting, in relief, of a gold laurel wreath supporting a scroll bearing the title "BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE" surmounted by two circles, the outer circle enamelled in light blue bearing the legend "THEBE YA SECHABA" in gold letters, and the inner red enamelled circle with the letters "B.D.F." in gold, the inner circles being connected by crossed swords and surmounted by the Coat of Arms of Botswana, in gold relief, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

   (4) The order shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 2,6 mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths-

         Royal      7 mm

         Gold      12 mm

         Royal      7 mm.

3.   Distinguished Service Medal

   (1) The Distinguished Service Medal (D.S.M.) may be awarded to a commissioned officer in the Botswana Defence Force who has completed not less than 20 years' continuous service in the Botswana Defence Force.

   (2) In the calculation of time, in making the award, any previous service in the Botswana Police Force of such officer shall be taken into consideration.

   (3) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of 40 mm, the obverse consisting of a green enamelled circular border with the legend "DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL D.S.M." in gold letters, and an inner circle covered by a hexagonal plate consisting, in relief, of a laurel wreath supporting a scroll bearing the title "BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE" surmounted by two circles, the outer circle enamelled in bottle green bearing the legend "THEBE YA SECHABA", the inner circle enamelled in red and with the letters "B.D.F.", the inner circles being connected by crossed swords and surmounted by the Coat of Arms of Botswana, in gold relief, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

   (4) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribben 2,6 mm in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths-

         Green      6 mm

         Gold      2 mm

         Green      10 mm

         Gold      2 mm

         Green      6 mm.

4.   Duty Code Order

   (1) The Duty Code Order (D.C.O.) may be awarded to any member of the administrative and technical staff of the Botswana Defence Force for devotion to duty.

   (2) The order shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, and shall be diamond shaped with 55 mm sides, showing a stand at each corner, the obverse consisting of four circles, the first border circle of matted gold is embossed "DUTY CODE ORDER D.C.O." in gold letters, the second circle enamelled in bottle green bears the legend "THEBE YA SECHABA" in gold letters, the third circle is of plain matted gold, the fourth and central circle is of red enamel with the letters "B.D.F." in gold, the four circles being connected by gold embossed crossed swords, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

   (3) The order shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 2,6 mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths-

         Green      9 mm

         Gold      8 mm

         Red      9 mm.

5.   Military Service Medal

   (1) The Military Service Medal (M.S.M.) may be awarded to any member of the Botswana Defence Force for sound operational conduct in the face of an enemy.

   (2) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of 40 mm, the obverse consisting of a white enamelled border with the legend "MILITARY SERVICE MEDAL M.S.M." in gold letters, the centre circle of matted gold bearing a black enamelled cross with a black centre circle with the letters "B.D.F." in gold, surmounted by crossed swords in gold relief, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

   (3) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon 2,6 mm in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths-

         Gold      6 mm

         Black      2 mm

         Gold      10 mm

         Black      2 mm

         Gold      6 mm.

6.   Conduct Leadership Cross

   (1) The Conduct Leadership Cross (C.L.C.) may be awarded to any member of the Botswana Defence Force for good, practical operational leadership in the face of an enemy.

   (2) The cross shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, and shall be in the shape of a cross with a width and length of 40 mm placed on a red enamelled 12 mm square, and with an 8 mm circular disc in green enamel with the letters "C.L.C." in gold letters positioned in the centre of the cross, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

   (3) The cross shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 2,6 mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths-

         Red      5 mm

         Black      2 mm

         Red      5 mm

         Black      2 mm

         Red      5 mm

         Black      2 mm

         Red      5 mm.

7.   Defence Force Medal for Bravery

   (1) The Defence Force Medal for Bravery (D.F.M.B.) may be awarded to any member of the Botswana Defence Force for conspicuous heroism and courage performed otherwise than in action against an enemy.

   (2) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, and shall be circular in shape with a diameter of 40 mm, the obverse consisting of a border circle enamelled in light blue bearing the legend "DEFENCE FORCE MEDAL FOR BRAVERY D.F.M.B." in gold letters, with an inner gold circle consisting, in relief, of the Coat of Arms of Botswana mounted in the centre of a red enamelled V, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

   (3) The medal shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 2,6 mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths-

         Royal      8 mm

         White      2 mm

         Royal      6 mm

         White      2 mm

         Royal      8 mm.

8.   Conduct Valour Cross

   (1) The Conduct Valour Cross (C.V.C.) may be awarded to any member of the Botswana Defence Force for acts of conspicuous valour performed in action against an enemy.

   (2) The cross shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24 ct gold, the obverse consisting of two circles placed on a four-pointed gold star with a width of 46 mm and a length of 50 mm between the ends of the diagonally opposite rays, with the outer circle enamelled in light blue bearing the legend "CONDUCT VALOUR CROSS C.V.C." in gold letters, and the inner circle enamelled in white with the letters "B.D.F." in gold, the two circles being connected by gold crossed swords, and the reverse having engraved upon it the name of the recipient and the date of the award.

   (3) The cross shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon 2,6 mm in width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and widths-

         Red      11 mm

         Silver      4 mm

         Green      11 mm.

9.   Pearl Jubilee Medal

   (1) The Pearl Jubilee Medal (P.J.M.) shall be awarded to any member of the Botswana Defence Force who has completed 30 years of honourable continuous service in the Botswana Defence Force.

   (2) The medal shall be struck in sterling silver and plated in 24ct gold, circular in shape with a diameter of 40mm, the obverse consisting of a black circular border with the legend "PEARL JUBILEE" in pearl letters, an inner diamond consisting, in relief, of a gold scroll bearing the title "BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE" summoned by two circles, the outer circle enameled in bottle green bearing the legend "THEBE YA SECHABA" in gold letters, the small inner circle enameled in red with the letters "BDF" in gold, the two circles connected by crossed swords and summoned by the Coat of Arms of Botswana in gold relief, and the reverse engraved on it the names of the recipient and the date of the award.

   (3) The ribbon shall be worn on the left breast, pendent from a gold clasp, affixed to a woven ribbon of 16mm length and 26mm width and consisting of vertical stripes from left to right in the following colours and width-
